If you’ve ever sat down with a blank journal page and thought “right then, now what?” you are in very good company.

Journaling is one of those practices that sounds brilliant in theory. Reflective, grounding, good for you. And then you actually sit down to do it and your mind goes completely blank, or you write the same three sentences you always write, or you spend ten minutes staring at the page and then give up and check your phone instead.

I spent years doing exactly this. Until I started bringing crystals into it.

Not in a complicated, ritualistic way. Just placing a crystal on the desk beside me before I started. Holding one in my hand while I thought about what I actually needed from this session. Letting the energy of the stone guide what I wrote about, rather than trying to force it from a brain that was already tired.

It sounds almost too simple. But it changed everything about how I journal.

Why crystals and journaling work so well together

Journaling is essentially a practice of self-awareness. You’re trying to notice what’s actually going on beneath the surface, what you’re feeling, what you need, what you keep coming back to without quite knowing why.

Crystals work in exactly the same territory. Each stone carries its own energetic quality, its own frequency, its own way of drawing your attention to something. When you bring them together, you’re not just writing in a notebook. You’re creating a genuinely intentional space where something can surface that might not have otherwise.

Think of it like this: a crystal doesn’t tell you what to write. But it can open a door.

How to do it

You don’t need a special set of crystals or a particular ritual to make this work. Here’s what I actually do, and what I suggest to the women I work with.

Step one: Pick up the crystal that catches your eye

Not the one you think you should use. Not the one that’s been sitting on your desk the longest. The one your hand goes to first. Your intuition is already working even before you’ve consciously decided anything, and that instinct is worth following.

Step two: Hold it for a moment before you open your journal

Just a minute or two. Breathe. Feel the weight of it in your hand. Let yourself settle. This sounds simple because it is, but it does something real. It signals to your nervous system that this is different from answering emails. This is your time.

Step three: Ask yourself what this crystal is here for today

Not in a dramatic way. Just quietly, what does this stone remind me of? What does it bring up? If I’m holding Rose Quartz, am I being invited to be kinder to myself today? If it’s Amethyst, am I being asked to slow down and trust the process? If it’s Citrine, where in my life am I resisting joy?

That question becomes your prompt. You don’t need a book of 365 journaling prompts when you’ve got a crystal in your hand.

Step four: Write

Don’t edit. Don’t worry about it making sense. Just follow wherever that question leads you.

A few crystals worth knowing for journaling

Amethyst is beautiful for introspective journaling. It quiets mental chatter and encourages you to go deeper rather than staying on the surface. If you tend to write in very practical terms (“I did this, then this happened, I feel fine”), Amethyst invites you further in.

Rose Quartz brings a gentle, compassionate energy to the page. It’s the stone to reach for when you’re being hard on yourself, when your inner critic is already warming up. Writing with Rose Quartz beside you has a way of making your words kinder.

Clear Quartz is brilliant for clarity journaling, when you’re trying to work something out, make a decision, or cut through the noise in your head. It amplifies your own intention, so if you sit down with a clear question, it helps you find a clear answer.

Black Tourmaline is one for the days when the world feels too loud and you need to create some energetic distance before you can write honestly. Hold it before you start rather than keeping it on the desk. Let it absorb what you need to let go of first.

Lepidolite is the one I reach for when I’m journaling about anxiety or overwhelm. It has a naturally calming, steadying quality (there’s a reason it’s a natural source of lithium) and it creates enough internal quiet that you can actually hear what you need to say.

One last thing

If this feels a bit much, start even smaller. Just place one crystal on the desk next to your journal before you start. You don’t have to do anything with it. Just let it be there.

Notice whether it changes anything about how you write.

I’d be willing to bet it does.

If you want to go further with your journaling practice, my Journaling Workshop is a brilliant place to start. We look at three completely different styles of journaling so you can find the one that actually fits you right now, and we weave crystals and oracle cards into the practice in a way that feels natural rather than complicated. It’s £20, self-paced, and yours to keep.
