You’ve got your crystals. They’re sitting on your windowsill looking beautiful, or tucked in your pocket doing their thing, or maybe gathering a bit of dust on the bookshelf because you’re not quite sure what to do with them yet. Here’s something a lot of people don’t realise: crystals absorb energy. That’s the whole point of them. But it also means they need a reset every now and then, just like you do.

Think of it this way. If you’d been carrying everyone else’s stuff around all day (their stress, their noise, their bad vibes) you’d want a shower and an early night. Your crystals aren’t any different.

So what exactly is cleansing?

Cleansing is simply the process of clearing out whatever energy your crystal has absorbed and restoring it to its natural state. It’s not weird, it’s not woo for the sake of woo. It’s maintenance. The energetic equivalent of washing your face. A crystal that hasn’t been cleansed in a while can feel heavy, dull, or just a bit off. You might not be able to articulate it, but something won’t feel quite right. And conversely, a freshly cleansed crystal often feels noticeably lighter and more vibrant in your hands.

If you’re a bit sceptical about all of this, that’s completely fine. Stay curious. Try it and see what you notice.

How often should you cleanse?

There’s no hard rule here, but a good starting point is:

When you first bring a crystal home; it’s been handled, displayed, shipped. Give it a fresh start.
After heavy use; if you’ve been working through something difficult and leaning on a particular stone, cleanse it afterwards.
Once a month as routine; a regular reset keeps things ticking along nicely.
When it just feels like it needs it; your instincts are better than you think. Trust them.

Five ways to cleanse your crystals

1. Moonlight
This is my personal favourite and the most forgiving option for beginners, because it works for virtually every crystal. Place your stones on a windowsill or outside overnight during a full moon. The light does the work. You don’t need to do anything else. It’s beautifully simple, and there’s something genuinely lovely about the ritual of it. Putting your crystals to bed under the moon and bringing them back in the morning feeling refreshed. Don’t stress if it’s cloudy. The energy of the moon is still there even when you can’t see it.

2. Sound
Sound cleansing is underrated and incredibly easy. A singing bowl, a tuning fork, even clapping your hands around your crystals. The vibration breaks up stagnant energy and resets the stone. This is especially good if you have a lot of crystals to cleanse at once, because you can do them all in one go. Just let the sound wash over them for a minute or two.

3. Smoke
Burning cleansing herbs (rosemary, lavender, and sage all work well) and passing your crystal through the smoke is a traditional and effective method. Hold the stone in the smoke for about 30 seconds, with the intention that anything that no longer serves is being cleared. Open a window first. Practically speaking, you’ll want the ventilation. Energetically speaking, it gives whatever you’re releasing somewhere to go.

4. Selenite

If you want a zero-effort option, get yourself a piece of selenite. It’s one of the few crystals that cleanses other crystals just by being near them. Place your stones on or next to a selenite slab overnight and they’ll be sorted by morning. The bonus? Selenite cleanses itself, so you never have to worry about it.

5. Breath and intention

This one gets skipped over because it sounds too simple, but don’t underestimate it. Hold your crystal, take a breath, and as you exhale onto the stone, set the clear intention that you’re releasing anything it’s been holding. Do it three times. Intention is the thread running through every cleansing method. The technique is the vehicle. What you bring to it is the fuel.

A quick word on water

You’ll often see water listed as a cleansing method, and for some crystals it’s absolutely fine. But, and this is important, several popular crystals should never go in water because they’ll dissolve, rust, or be permanently damaged. Selenite, malachite, pyrite, and anything ending in “-ite” that you’re not sure about: check before you dunk. When in doubt, use moonlight. It works for everything and costs nothing.

The bit about intention

I said it above, but it’s worth saying again. Cleansing isn’t a mechanical process. You can go through the motions with smoke or moonlight, but the thing that makes it land is your intention. Take a breath, hold the crystal, and genuinely decide that you’re clearing it. Even thirty seconds of presence makes the difference.

This is true of all crystal work, really. The crystals meet you where you are. Show up for it, even briefly, and it will show up for you.
