You can feel it, can’t you?

The light is changing. The air feels different. There’s a subtle sense that things are beginning to move again.

And yet…

You’re not suddenly full of clarity and motivation. You’re not springing out of bed ready to conquer the world. If anything, you feel a strange mix of restlessness and reluctance.

Energy is rising. But so is resistance.

And that’s not a problem, it’s biology, it’s psychology, it’s seasonal rhythm.

The Nervous System Doesn’t Switch Seasons Overnight

Nature transitions gradually. The soil doesn’t thaw in a single afternoon and seeds don’t erupt the second there’s more daylight. Your nervous system works the same way.

Through winter, your body adapts to lower light, slower rhythms, more inward energy. Hormones shift, sleep patterns change, your system conserves.

As the light increases in March, your body begins adjusting again. Cortisol levels subtly rise earlier in the day. Serotonin starts fluctuating differently and there’s more external stimulation.

That rising energy can feel exciting, but it can also feel destabilising, because your system is still catching up.

Resistance Is Often a Protective Reflex

When change begins, even positive change, part of you checks in with caution.

More light.

More invitations.

More expectation.

More possibility.

Your nervous system asks: Is this safe? Are we ready? Resistance is protection.

You may notice:

  • Procrastination on things you actually want
  • Irritability or low patience
  • A desire to withdraw just as life speeds up
  • Overwhelm when your calendar starts filling

This isn’t self-sabotage. It’s recalibration. Part of you wants to move forward, but part of you isn’t fully convinced yet.

Both parts are valid.

The Myth of the Spring Reset

There’s a narrative that spring is about instant renewal, new habits, fresh starts, life overhaul, blooming everywhere. But real growth doesn’t begin with a dramatic leap, it begins with strengthening roots.

If you rush the transition from winter rest to spring action, you override the integration phase. And that’s often when burnout creeps back in by late April. March isn’t about becoming a new person, it’s about gently increasing capacity.

Expansion Triggers Vulnerability

There’s another layer to resistance that often goes unspoken. Expansion makes you visible. More energy means more action. More action means more exposure. And exposure can feel uncomfortable.

If winter allowed you to retreat, hide a little, recover, March begins to ask:

Are you willing to step forward again?

That can stir up old fears:

  • What if I fail?
  • What if I can’t sustain it?
  • What if I outgrow something… or someone?

Resistance is sometimes grief for the comfort of smaller spaces.

How to Work With Rising Energy (Without Fighting Yourself)

Instead of forcing momentum, try this:

1. Increase gently.

Don’t double your output because the sun’s out. Add one thing. Just one.

2. Keep grounding practices in place.

As energy rises, grounding becomes more important, not less. Warm food. Slow mornings. Time outside. Body-based awareness.

3. Watch for comparison creep.

As others appear energised and “on it”, it’s easy to feel behind. Remember: seasonal shifts land differently in every body.

4. Let resistance speak.

Ask it what it’s protecting. Often it’s not saying “don’t grow.” It’s saying “go slowly.”

5. Strengthen boundaries before expanding commitments.

As opportunities increase, so do demands. Capacity isn’t just about energy, it’s about protection.

Growth Is Not a Race

March is the month of emergence, not explosion. The soil is softening, the roots are stretching, but nothing is in full bloom yet.

If you feel both hopeful and hesitant, motivated and resistant, open and cautious, you are exactly where you’re meant to be.

Energy rising doesn’t require immediate action, it requires awareness. Because when you honour the transition, rather than override it, motivation returns in a way that feels steady instead of frantic. And steady growth always lasts longer than forced bloom.

If you’d like support navigating seasonal shifts like this, without pressure to be constantly “on”, the Stone & Joy Self Care Sanctuary is a free, private space where we explore energy, balance, and sustainable wellbeing together.
